We were delighted to welcome Dr Alan Brener, Deputy Director of the Centre for Ethics and Law at University College London and Charlotte Pope-Williams, BACFI Committee member, Associate at Pinsent Masons and member of the Employed Barristers’ and Young Bar Committees of the Bar Council to speak at this event. Chaired by Laurence Fry, Vice Chair of BACFI and Head of Legal at JX Nippon Exploration and Production (U.K.) Limited, we had over 60 attendees join us on MS Teams.
Dr Brener outlined effective compliance and corporate governance issues when working within businesses, touching on topics such as speaking up when a problem is encountered, business models, culture and personal accountability and failures of leadership and ownership. His slides are available HERE.
Charlotte outlined why practitioners should be concerned about ethics, professional negligence and indemnity insurance and gave some scenarios and case studies as examples. Links to the cases she mentioned are below along with a link to the Bar Council Ethics Hub.
