BACFI Seminar: The Oil and Gas industry: The role of an employed barrister and its challenges
On Wednesday 10th April, Laurence Fry (JX Nippon Exploration and Production (U.K.) Limited), Grant Warnsby (BP) and Bob Moore (Ardent Oil Ltd) gave an informative and entertaining presentation of life as an inhouse lawyer and executive in the Oil & Gas industry. They described the type of work typically performed by employed barristers and some of the key challenges facing the industry. The seminar was kindly chaired by James Kitching of Fried Frank.
Laurence began his presentation with a video produced by “Oil & Gas UK” (the trade association for the UK’s upstream offshore sector) which gave an overview of the UK’s offshore exploration and production business. He then described the “life-cycle” of an oil and gas field; the UK regulatory regime; the various commercial agreements required to make the industry function; the types of legal work encountered inhouse; and some of the challenges currently facing the industry’s participants.
Grant gave a very informative and entertaining view of life as an international oil and gas lawyer with industry giant BP, including some amusing incidents from his experience working in unusual places like the oilfields of Iraq, which he sub-titled “it shouldn’t happen to a lawyer!”.
Bob described his career in the industry which has seen him work in roles as an oil lawyer, an oil company executive and now as founder/managing director of a smaller independent oil company. He shared a fascinating insight into life as an oil company executive trying to develop an oil and gas business and the many challenges he must deal with.
James concluded the seminar by chairing a Q&A session which generated some thoughtful questions and good audience participation.
The seminar received very positive feedback, especially from junior lawyers in the audience who gained a valuable insight.
Thank you to James Kitching and Fried Frank for hosting such a successful event. Laurence’s slides and Bob’s slides can be found on the website together with a copy of a publication from OGUK regarding the industry outlook for 2019: http://www.bacfi.org/files/OGUK-Business-Outlook-Report-2019.pdf
