BACFI supports the efforts being made by the Bar Standards Board, the Bar Council and the Inns of Court to increase training opportunities for new Barristers. We have been lobbying hard for more flexible pupillage arrangements and the Professional Standards Committee would like to hear from anyone who intends to apply, or has recently applied, to have their firm recognised as an Authorised Training and Education Provider (AETO). BACFI believes that the rules remain too rigid to attract commercial firms' Human Resources departments.
BACFI is extremely concerned at the shortage of pupillages and the consequent increase in numbers of barristers who are unable to complete their training. There is a serious mismatch between numbers of BPTC graduates and pupillages or new Bar Training Courses.
BACFI membership is open to BPTC and new Bar Training Course students who have joined an Inn of Court. Members are available to give careers guidance and give regular talks to students on practice and opportunities at the CFI Bar. BACFI members are also active in their Inn committees and as Benchers; organising employed bar functions and tailored training. BACFI Inn representatives can be contacted via the Professional Standards Committee.
CPD
The rules on which courses qualify for CPD are complicated and can be found on the Bar Standards Board website under the Continuing Professional Development section at www.barstandardsboard.org.uk.
Seminars
BACFI evening seminars are designed to cover subjects which are of interest to members and all carry at least one hour of CPD points. The Events Committee welcomes suggestions from members for subjects for future events. Please contact events@bacfi.org.
CPD Training Courses
We are often sent details of CPD training courses offered by others. Whilst we cannot warrant their value for money, we will add links here to the ones we consider might be of interest to members.
