Denning Lecture

BACFI was delighted to welcome the Supreme Court Justice, The Rt Hon Lord Reed, as the 2015 BACFI Denning Lecturer. He had chosen as is topic “Cyberspace and the Law” and proceeded to give a fascinating and thought provoking lecture on the how the current legal framework is being applied to crimes committed on the internet. The lecture touched on patent law, EU law, defamation, human rights and given the global reach of the internet – conflicts of law also. All the attendees thoroughly engaged in the topic and asked wide ranging questions at the conclusion of the lecture, covering the additional topics of competition law and the possibility of fines, and future proposed international conventions on cyber law. BACFI’s incoming President, Lady Hale, also came to listen to and support her colleague, and BACFI was delighted that they both stayed to enjoy some wine and a mince pie or three at the BACFI Christmas party which immediately followed the Denning Lecture. General merriment was enjoyed by all!
